NY Climate Week: How business is meeting the climate resiliency challenge

Impactful Risk Reduction and Worthwhile Investments

NEST, Sept 24th, 10 am

Working with NEST, we’re bringing a panel together to discuss how climate change has shifted from being a theoretical future to an everyday reality. Businesses have altered their perceptions of risk and what investments will be needed to adapt. This has often taken the form of “hardening” physical assets by building protections against climate hazards. But other options exist as well, including design and material choices, business continuity processes and new technology tools to better predict climate hazards and assess their risks. Many businesses are still struggling with the choices and tradeoffs that increasing resiliency and adaptation capability present. ‍ ‍

In this discussion, distinguished panel members will share their knowledge and thoughts from several different angles: from practitioners on the front lines to academic, investor and solution provider perspectives.‍ ‍

Key questions we’ll cover include:

●       Where are companies making investments now?

●       Where should businesses invest now vs. later? How should companies think about that decision?  Should they build or buy the solutions?

●       When is increasing insurance a better investment than “hardening” assets?

●       How should you respond to insurers’ withdrawal from high-risk regions?

●       Who should “own” climate resilience within an organization?

●       How do you make the business case for resilience investments?

●       To what extent should a company be focused on its own resilience vs. at a community or industry level?

●       What are some valuable resilience tools, data sets or solution providers?‍‍‍ ‍
